Pantone Unveils Two Post-Apocalyptic Colors for 2021
In light of 2020, one color would not suffice for Pantone’s Color of the Year selection. For the second time in two decades, Pantone chose two colors: Illuminating (PANTONE 13-0647) and Ultimate Gray (PANTONE 17-5104). This symbiotic color selection anticipates a cheerful optimism that is balanced by the ‘practical and rocksolid’ color of gray. Pantone’s decision encapsulates a delicate yin-yang relationship between positivity and pragmatism.
Illuminating 2021
Pantone remarks that as people seek for ways “to fortify themselves with energy, clarity and hope to overcome the continuing uncertainty, spirited and emboldening shades satisfy our quest for vitality”. If 2020 has left us in an anemic state, Pantone sees its color choice as a “bright and cheerful yellow sparking with vivacity” and takes on the restorative power of “a warming shade imbued with solar power”.

Ultimate Stability in Gray
Similarly, we can seek to nature to draw meaning from Ultimate Gray. According to Pantone, “The colors of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time, Ultimate Gray quietly assures, encouraging feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience.”
